The perfect fundraising effort has many components. Leave an element out and your final result may not be what you expect. Learn to perfect each of these 10 must-have steps and your efforts will yield better results every time.

Step 7: Turn gifts into investments

A gift is a wonderful thing. The word “gift” itself makes people feel good. Most people like to get them, and many enjoy the giving part. But when it comes to supporting a worthwhile cause, by changing the language to “investment” you stress the importance of the gesture. In fact, you may be transferring some of the responsibility to your donor and asking them to play a bigger role – even if you’re not asking for more money. The proposition to “Invest in our efforts and help us reach our goals” may go a long way for your organization.

mTip: Leverage your mobile database to educate non-traditional supporters on how they can invest more in your organization. Text campaigns can include repeat donation requests, call for volunteers, pledges and more – all equaling more than a $5 or $10 one-time donation.

Step 8: Cultivate

Think of your supporter base as a plant that will grow. A first-time donor may give a small amount. But as you foster that relationship and bring them closer to the roots of your organization, they will become more devoted and supportive. It’s your responsibility to pave the way for donors to become involved. Keep this in mind as you develop messaging and segment your groups.
