Earlier this week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that the United States will provide $110 million in emergency aid for displaced people of Swat Valley, where fighting between the Taliban and the Pakistani Military has driven more than 1.2 million people from their homes in the last month. Clinton praised Pakistan for "leading the fight against extremists that threaten the future of their country and our collective security." In her announcement, the Secretary of State highlighted a great way in which Americans can assist the relief effort in what is developing into an extreme humanitarian crisis:
"Now, Americans can use technology to help, as well. Using your cell phones, Americans can text the word SWAT to the number 20222 and make a $5 contribution that will help the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) provide tents, clothing, food, and medicine to hundreds of thousands of affected people."
Pakistan's ambassador in Washington, Husain Haqqani, has expressed gratitude for the United States' $110 million in emergency relief aid. "It is a manifestation of the commitment of the United States to support the people of Pakistan and of the generosity of the US people," he said. Haqqani went on to emphasize how important it is for Americans to continue their support by texting SWAT to 20222:
"We also expect the American people to donate generously by texting SWAT to 20222 from their cell phones. The contribution of millions of Americans will reassure Pakistanis struggling to root out Al Qaeda and Taliban, depriving America's enemies of the argument that Americans do not care."
More than one million people have already been displaced by the fighting, and an additional 100,000 people continue to be driven from their homes every day. We can all make a difference by spreading the word, and encouraging everyone in our networks to make a $5 contribution to the UNHCR's Pakistan relief effort by texting SWAT to 20222. Mobile donations for the UNHCR's Pakistan relief effort are powered by mGive.
mGive is pleased to see that the internet is a buzz about the UNHCR mobile giving campaign and the response to the crisis. We encourage everyone to keep up the momentum and continue spreading the word!
