On November 27,2012 a movement was started. It started with a great idea and grew into something huge. Over 2,500 nonprofits inspired more than 100,000 people around the nation to come together and officially kick off the giving season with #GivingTuesday.
With about 30 days left and more than 3,000 partners, we are looking forward to an even bigger give back this year. #GivingTuesday is taking over our mSpirations and we will be sharing stories, tips and ideas each week leading up to December 3rd, this year’s #GivingTuesday..
So, how does an organization make the most of a day dedicated to giving?
Use #GivingTuesday to kick start your mobile program and tap into the power of social media to empower followers to take action one-text-at-a-time.
“Technology and digital really have the ability to solve global problems and make this world a better place”, said Sharon Feder of Mashable in an interview last year.
Last year a small organization providing aid to military and their families used our mobile infrastructure to participate in #GivingTuesday. They used Facebook and Twitter to drive donations and share their success with supporters throughout the day . They shared emotional photos alongside their calls-to-action asking their followers to make a difference.
Every hour, they shared their story and asked people to make a $10 text donation, and they watched as text donations came pouring in to support our troops. Using social and mobile together allowed them to tap into a group of new donors.
As the day continued, the organization encouraged donors to use social media to challenge their friends to also become supporters. True to the #GivingTuesday message, it wasn’t just about a donation—it was about bringing a community together to lend a hand and change a life.
“You don’t have to be a billionaire, you don’t have to be a big name; everyone can be a philanthropist,” Said Aaron Sherinian of the United Nations Foundation last year in a video.
So how can you join the powers of mobile and social to bolster your #GivingTuesday efforts?
