Where is mGive Going From Here?

Posted by mGive Team on Sep 7, 2011 6:45:00 AM

Nestled in the eclectic Lower Highlands neighborhood overlooking the glossy high-rises of downtown Denver, mGive calls an 1896 red brick building “home.” We recently took a good hard look at ourselves, asking, “Where is mGive going from here?” A question many, if not all, organizations face at some point in their growth cycle.

Our answer to the age-old question came when a team member casually mentioned in a sales meeting, “You can’t know where you’re going, unless you know where you've been.” And with that, we collectively began looking at our past in anticipation of our journey ahead.

It’s often easy to forget that mGive, along with the mobile donation channel, was founded only a few years ago. Our goal of making a difference through mobile was quickly embraced by the nation’s top wireless carriers, not to mention The Red Cross, The United Way and hundreds of other nonprofits, big and small. Soon after we opened shop in 2005, mGive was placed on a steady path of SMS (text) donation, engagement, advocacy and innovation.

mGive Congratulates Convio on an Excellent Summit

Posted by mGive Team on Nov 4, 2010 7:51:00 AM

Late last month, mGive representatives participated in the 2010 Convio Summit alongside our partners and clients. We were thrilled to take part in such an engaging and informative event that enabled us to further solidify our position as a partner with such a key service provider in the philanthropic space. We wish to congratulate Convio on a successful Summit!

We wanted to thank our partners and our clients who visited with us at our booth. It is always a pleasure to engage face-to-face with existing supporters, as well as new organizations who are interested in the mobile donation channel.

In addition to conducting our traditional mobile donation demonstrations while exhibiting at the Summit, we also took the opportunity to showcase our CRM integration capabilities and many of our new tools that we launched in the month of October. Among these highlights, was mGive’s new mRaiser tool that directly integrates with Convio’s TeamRaiser. mGive’s mRaiser is a peer-to-peer fundraising tool that encourages friendly competition among supporters who set donation goals and utilize their networks to collect mobile micro-donations to reach that goal. To learn more about the services of mGive, including those featured at the Convio Summit, please contact sales@mgive.com.

We hope you enjoyed the Convio Summit as much as we did and we look forward to more opportunities to connect directly with you in the future.  Thank you for helping mGive change the way people give.

The Great Accelerator: Social Media and Text Donations

Posted by mGive Team on Jun 7, 2010 1:48:00 AM

Like milk and cookies, hats and gloves or wash and wax; sometimes two different things are just better when they’re together.

We’re still in the early stages with using mobile technology to advance a social cause, but almost from the beginning, we have been aware of how social media can help accelerate a campaign’s success. We saw it in our early work with Alicia Keys and Keep a Child Alive: Facebook and viral apps were a part of the campaign from the start.

During the Haiti disaster, we saw how social media helped the Red Cross mobile donation campaign take on a life of its own. People shared news of the earthquake using social media, and then they shared ways everyday people could help using Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. The news took hold and then donations took off.

Social media’s growth rate is unmatched by other recent communication technology shifts – radio, telephone, cell phone, TV, email. This video, with updated statistics about the influence and growth of social media, provides a lot of insight about the phenomenon of social media: http://socialnomics.net/2010/05/05/social-media-revolution-2-refresh/. Created by Eric Qualman, @equalman, of Socialnomics.

Here are some reasons social media should be a part of mobile donation campaigns:

    • While the demographic for users of both mobile technology and social media are starting to age, both definitely skew a bit younger
    • The penetration of both social media and mobile technology is high; Facebook now has more users than the total number of US citizens, and more than 90% of the US population now uses a cellphone
    • Both social media and mobile donations make it easy for supporters to translate intention to action
    • Social media enables supporters to help a cause they care about – both by donating and by spreading the word
    • The nature of being social is to share, opening the door to hundreds or thousands of potential new donors

We’ll talk about some of the best practices we have seen that combine social media with mobile donations in a future post.

Mobile Voting Could Become Reality by 2012: VeriSign

Posted by mGive Team on Apr 7, 2009 10:20:00 AM

Mobile Marketer's Mickey Alam Khan recently published an article about VeriSign, Inc.'s predictions for the future of mobile application technology. As indicated by the article's title, VeriSign's messaging and mobile media division recently projected that voting by mobile devices could become a nationwide reality by 2012. "The success of the Obama presidential campaign last year using a combination of television, grassroots and the Internet with last-mile support from mobile is proof of the channel's potential," said Khan.

VeriSign also predicts increased mobile usage within a few other areas, including nonprofit fundraising. According to Khan, "VeriSign and the Mobile Giving Foundation expect that more than $5 million will be raised this year via mobile charitable giving." Mobile fundraising campaigns have been particularly successful for relief organizations like the American Red Cross, and it is likely that mobile giving will continue to "resonate with the mobile-savvy Generation Y audience." Also highlighted in the article is the fact that nonprofits can benefit from using mobile for purposes beyond fundraising. "Nonprofits will also encourage donors to opt into mobile programs to receive alerts, updates and news of events through SMS messages." The mobile device is increasingly being recognized by nonprofits and other organizations as tool by which direct and valuable connections can be established with constituents and donors.

Super Bowl XLIII's Mobile Ads

Posted by mGive Team on Feb 10, 2009 7:03:00 AM

Kim Dushinski of Mobile Marketing Profits posted an excellent video review of companies that incorporated mobile into their Super Bowl XLIII commercials. In the video, Dushinski discusses which company's advertisements "showed they understand our love of mobile," and utilized the technology as a direct response tool.

Among Dushinski's top rated mobile advertisements that aired during this year's Super Bowl is the United Way Text to Donate Commercial, which encouraged viewers to donate $5 to United Way Youth Fitness Programs by texting FIT to 864833 (UNITED). She praises the advertisement, saying that it was "a great, quick ad with a build up, a call to action, and a text to donate program," and "an excellent example of how mobile can make any ad a direct response."

Dushinski went on to rank the United Way's commercial above those of other charities, in terms of their fundraising effectiveness, because it gave viewers the opportunity to express their concern about the issue at hand by donating immediately. "I commend United Way for using mobile to turn an ad in the Super Bowl into a direct response donation program, way to go United Way," she concludes. Mobile donations for the United Way are powered by mGive.
