Mobile Makes Poetry

Mobile Makes Poetry When love and mobile connect to solve social problems, it’s poetry. In honor of Valentine’s Day, here’s a story about how love, poetry and mobile came together—across the country, in a matter of hours—to spread love.

Elise Ackerman, a Forbes blogger living in Oakland, CA, read a NY Times article about Jesús "Papoleto" Meléndez, a highly regarded urban poet living in the Barrio of New York City. He'd fallen behind on his rent and was in danger of being evicted. Elise works for a tech company and quickly set up a poetry hotline where callers can hear Papoleto reading his work.

Then savvy Elise contacted The mGive Foundation to set up a mobile fundraising campaign to accompany the poetry hotline. Elise knew instinctively what has been proven by studies: mobile donation campaigns are the fastest growing mode of philanthropy and everyone in the U.S. has at least one mobile device at their fingertips at all times. Callers to the hotline would likely be using their mobile phone to hear him recite his poems, then use their mobile phone to become an everyday philanthropists to help save Papoleto and public poetry.

mGive immediately reached out to one of the 500 nonprofits we have stringently vetted in order to be sure funds donated to Papoleto get to him quickly and safely. One of our top performing nonprofit clients is the Wish Upon A Hero Foundation, the perfect partner to raise mobile donations for Papolito because their mission is to help individuals with specific needs.

Just like that, we made our own mobile donation poetry, within hours of mGive receiving Elise’s call. Mobile donations make it possible to share love to anyone, even a poet across the country. Call 1-630-4-A-Rhyme to hear Papoleto recite his brilliant work. Then text POETRY to 80077 to help keep a brilliant poet safe in his home. We're excited to be a part of this!
