The perfect fundraising effort has many components. Leave an element out and your final result may not be what you expect. Learn to perfect each of these 10 must-have steps and your efforts will yield better results every time.

Last time we discussed the importance of turning gifts into investments and cultivating mobile donors. Miss out on part of our series? Check out out part one, part two, part three and part four to see past posts!

Step 9: Think long term

Just like cultivating support, looking into the future is also critical. As you cultivate your supporters, you need to lead them in the right direction. Make sure you have developed programs that fit with every type of donor. Keep them engaged with your mission. Develop programs and create opportunities. It’s always easier to keep a dedicated donor involved than to find new ones.

mTip: Look at the people around you. Chances are they have a phone on them or nearby. Now, look at your website analytics. If your traffic from a mobile device has been increasing over the past few years, you should have a long-term mobile strategy in place. More and more people access information through their mobile phone, regardless of the reason. Why not make supporting your cause easy and convenient by having a mobile plan in place?

Step 10: Expect the unexpected

Things change. It’s that simple. But when you’re fundraising and come across hurdles, it’s your job to tackle them. Don’t be afraid - it’s par for the course. Have volunteers that cancel on you? Go to your backups. (You have backups right?) Have a long time donor that says no? Ask them why? Maybe there’s a way to save the relationship. But if not, you may learn something about that particular donor, or maybe even identify something that will become a theme in your fundraising efforts.

mTip: Mobile is one of the fastest and most immediate ways to reach people when you need unexpected or additional support. It empowers you to reach the people you need, when you need them.

There are many components to fundraising. Mobile is just one of those components, but in this day and age it’s an essential one. The days of people under the age of 21 being the only heavy users of mobile are gone. Mobile is a technology that touches most people on a daily basis. By embracing these 10 things you should know about fundraising you’ll be better organized, better prepared and, hopefully, more successful in your mobile efforts.
