Today is Veteran’s Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars. Prior to writing this blog, like many Americans, I was not aware of the history of Veteran’s Day or the significance of why it falls on November 11th each year . . .
Welcome to Veteran’s Day History 101!As most people know, World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, but what they don’t know is that the war had actually ended seven months earlier. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities was declared between the Allied nations and Germany. The following year, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that November 11th be commemorated as Armistice Day. Armistice Day was declared as a national holiday in the United States in 1926 and later became a federal holiday in 1938. Armistice Day finally became recognized as Veteran’s Day, due to the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War. On June 1, 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the amendment to the 1938 act that had made Armistice Day a holiday, striking the word “Armistice” in favor of the word “Veterans,” honoring American veterans of all wars.
With approximately 23.2 million military veterans in the United States (according to the U.S. Census Bureau and United States Department of Veterans Affairs) Veteran’s Day serves as the perfect opportunity to celebrate and honor American veterans for their patriotism, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for our country.
