Using Mobile to Boost Your Current Fundraising Efforts- NP Times

The NonProfit Times wrote an excellent article reflecting on the contributions of mobile to the fundraising industry. The author cites Teleton MexAmerica as having largely capitalized on the benefits of mobile during the organizations annual telethon fundraising event this year. "The telethon aired on a cable channel with nearly 5 million U.S. subscribers and in one day 15,232 mobile donors gave more than $76,000," it says. Mobile donations for Teleton MexAmerica are powered by mGive.

As mGive's Tony Aiello points out in the article, the number of mobile donors surpassed that of online donors, bringing in a substantial amount of money that the organization would not have received without a mobile giving program in place. Situations like this are not uncommon among organizations that have incorporated mobile into their fundraising channels. Children's Miracle Network, another mGive client, had similar success with mobile fundraising.  During a radio-a-thon event this year, the Children's Hospital of Orange County (a Children's Miracle Network Hospital) raised nearly $10,000 in mobile donations over the course of just three hours.

The article goes on to discuss an important factor that nonprofit organizations must consider in order to effectively incorporate mobile into their fundraising efforts. Mobile should be "a part of your overall strategy and that's true for any channel you communicate with your people on. It should all be part of one larger plan and appropriately branded" says Grace Markarian, online communications manager for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). In other words, organizations should incorporate mobile giving campaigns into every part of their existing promotional activities. Mobile should be used as a complement to existing fundraising efforts, not as a stand-alone fundraising tactic or strategy.
