The holiday season is officially upon us and, for many, this represents an important time for family, community, love, and gratitude.
However, we must remember there are people all around us feeling vulnerable, lost, and suffering in ways we can’t understand. It can be hard to tell who these people are just by looking at them, and many try to carry the burden themselves by hiding their fears, pain, suffering, and secrets behind a happy exterior, a private shield of sorts.
Our CFO and COO, Stephen Deason, spoke to over a thousand people on precisely this topic last week. Why?
Because the area of addiction and recovery is one that truly touches our hearts, and we feel called to serve those providing service within this sector. We believe that, if more people had a safe environment to speak honestly and openly about their struggles, it could break down the social stigmas surrounding addiction and mental health, allowing people to empower each other and build a community of strength and hope for all.
We would like to share with you the powerful story shared by Stephen earlier this week.
As the new COO and CFO of mGive and Rally4, Stephen has brought with him his vast wealth of knowledge as innovative business leader, a financial scholar, researcher, and author, with an MSc. and MBA from Emory University. However, even with this amazing success, his life journey has not been easy.
Stephen experienced significant adversity from major traumas in his life, and the result was a completely shattered soul. He was lost, alone.
At the time, he wasn’t sure what would work to support him through his trauma and propel him forward, but he knew he needed to be a part of something bigger than himself.
He needed community.
Overcoming adversity has been a lifelong pursuit for Stephen. It required resilience and perseverance in the evaluation, determination, and self-discovery processes that ultimately lead him on his journey to healing.
For all of us that struggle and want to overcome our own personal adversity, it is vital to experience a deep sense of community and develop an appreciation for belonging to something bigger and outside of ourselves including serving others.
Stephen recently spoke at the Rise Up Against Addiction 5K, hosted by Shatterproof, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the devastation that addiction causes to families. There, he was able to share his story and bring awareness to the disease of addiction to this community. Through his leadership and activism, he’s been an ambassador for Shatterproof for over a year.
We invite you to watch this inspiring video in hopes that Stephen’s story is relevant to you or someone you know struggling with addiction.
To all the non-profit organizations that deal with addiction and mental health, we thank you for all the important work that you do, and we are honored to work with you in spreading this message of hope and healing to the world!
“I’ll leave you with this: Recovery is amazing, authenticity is freeing, each of you is a miracle! I am filled with gratitude and energy as we work together, moving the conversation from a rhetoric about addiction to a discussion about the possibilities of Recovery that leads to a vibrant and fulfilling life." - Stephen Deason
