Remembering the Haiti earthquake 9 years later.
We've come a long way, but there is still a long road ahead. I want to share our experience working on the Text HAITI relief campaigns, and share what we have learned then and now.
It was a Tuesday afternoon, a little after 5:30pm on January 12, 2010 in Denver. I was heading out of the office when I saw our Operations Manager.
“Hey! What are you still doing here?” I asked.
“I just got a call from Jimmy. I guess there was an earthquake in Haiti. I’m going to spin up a keyword real quick then I’m out of here” he replied.

You’re cruising along the freeway at 60 mph and you can’t stand that stupid song on the radio another second. The A/C is too high. Your kid is throwing crumbs at the baby. Your phone rings.
Any of these things can distract you while you’re driving. You think you need to look away from the road for just a quick second, and bam. It’s like you’ve just gone a block and half while staring at the clouds.
When we think of distracted driving, the first thing that comes to mind is a teen with a cell phone sending just that one little text, but anything that takes your eyes and your mind off the road is a distraction, and it’s super dangerous.

mGive is proud to be an agency partner for Represent.Us and extremely excited about the announcement of Jennifer Lawrence joining the board. The Represent.Us board is already a powerhouse including Adam McKay and David O. Russell. The stars are aligning with a combination of an incredible nonprofit, a passionate and influential board, and a leader in nonprofit marketing. mGive is certain that this all-star team can make the Represent.Us creed of “Fixing Corruption Can Change Everything” a reality. Jennifer Lawrence expressed her excitement about being part of this change in this recent Vanity Fair article.
Winston Cook, COO of mGive, when asked about the expectations for the coming year for Represent.Us, said, “It really is a perfect storm. Represent.Us has an incredible story, mGive has the platform to get that story to the masses via every digital medium using SMS, Google Grants, Email and Social Media Marketing. The star-studded board and passionate staff and volunteers will be crucial to getting the message of 'ending corruption' out. As we ignite the fire, change will be a foregone conclusion. mGive is proud to be a part of this vanguard!”
For more, watch Jennifer Lawrence teach students how government really works.

Millennials and Fundraising - Why Mobile Giving?
Millennials can perhaps best be described as enigmatic: we seek to have a real and tangible impact on the world, but we’re lazy; we wear fancy clothes and Apple watches, but we’re swimming in student loan debt and decrying rising health care premiums. We protest in force to support causes we deem just, but we’re apathetic, and have never topped 22% of the electorate in a presidential election. It is within these conflicting ideas, however, that the truth about millennials becomes much more simple.
We’re just picky!
We demand to be spoken to in the right way by the right people and for the right reasons in order to feel inspired. We want to donate what little money we have to the right causes and to feel as though we’re making an impact, but that doesn’t mean we want to put effort into doing so, or even get out of bed. We want to talk to people and make real connections, but from the safety of being behind a screen.

A mobile keyword seems really simple right? It’s just a word that someone sends via text message to a short code (essentially a shortened phone number) so they can join a mobile community or make a mobile donation. Sounds basic enough. (Text TANGO to 80077 right now to see it in action). But that keyword is more powerful than you think. It can do so much for your organization. It’s a huge opportunity for you to gain and retain supporters in a whole new way.

Last week, a few of us from mGive headed out to Boulder to join other Certified B Corps at B Corporations‘ Day of Service at Growing Gardens. Now I must admit, I am already very lucky that at my daily “office job” I get to help nonprofits across the country work toward their missions and make the world a better place. However, it is extra special when I get the opportunity to actually get out into the field and help out first hand. And this experience was literally out in a field!
